Unsolicited Advice Gone Wrong

I've always considered myself to be someone who genuinely cares about others and wants to help them succeed. This summer, my cousin's kids stayed with us for a few weeks while their parents went on vacation. One of the daughters, Emily, is sixteen and very into fitness and bodybuilding. She was working hard on her diet and exercise routine but seemed frustrated that she wasn't making progress as quickly as she wanted. At first, I kept my distance, respecting her space to figure things out for herself. But after a couple of weeks of watching her struggle so much, I started to feel like maybe she needed some guidance from someone with more experience. So one day, while we were at the local park and they asked me about what kind of exercises work best for strength training and muscle building, I jumped right in. I gave them a detailed lecture on how lifting heavy weights can sometimes be less effective than doing high-repetition exercises with lighter weights. I went over dietary tips for maximizing muscle gain and minimizing fat storage. By the end, I felt like I had really helped Emily understand what she was missing out on by sticking to her current regimen. That night, after dinner, my wife gave me a sideways glance as I told her how I'd given these insights to our cousin's daughter. She said something along the lines of 'maybe you shouldn't have assumed she wasn't doing things right when she clearly knows more about it than us,' which stung but made sense. The next morning, Emily didn't look at me when we ate breakfast and was very quiet all day long. When I tried to start a conversation with her later on in the week, she seemed distant and defensive whenever the topic of exercise or diet came up. It was as if my 'helpful' advice had made things worse. After they left, I couldn't stop thinking about how uninvited my advice really was. Reflecting back, it's clear that while my intentions were good, my execution could have been a lot better. This has stayed with me for weeks now and serves as an important reminder to mind my own business sometimes.
