The Customer Who Broke My Concentration...

I work in the electronics department at a big-box store. It's been a slow day with not many customers, and I was starting to feel like my shifts were going nowhere but into overtime without ever getting a chance to really help anyone or do something meaningful. Then, around lunchtime, this one customer walks in... They had this look about them that just said they were looking for trouble...or maybe just didn't know how else to interact with people today? I can never tell these days. Anyway, as soon as they walked in and saw me at the register, they came over and started asking questions so fast it was like trying to drink from a fire hydrant. I tried my best to answer all their queries about our new inventory...but man, did this person have a lot of them! And then, just when I thought things were going okay and maybe they'd buy something today, they dropped the bombshell: they wanted me to switch out one product for another that we no longer had in stock. Of course, that wasn't possible without checking with my manager first...which took an hour! But here's where it gets really bad: while I was away, this customer kept calling over other staff and trying to hassle them about their lack of inventory too. It's not like we have control over when products come in or out; that's all done from the head office! And they were giving me this look like I was some kind of incompetent employee who just didn't know how to do my job. When I finally came back, apologetic and ready to make things right, they just scoffed and walked out without buying anything. Now every time I see them in the store, which seems to be a lot lately, I feel so embarrassed...like maybe there's something wrong with me for not being able to keep up or provide what they wanted. It's been weeks now since this happened, and I still can't shake the feeling that everyone must think I'm some kind of incompetent fool when it comes to customer service. Even though I know deep down inside that we all have those days where nothing goes right, and it wasn't just me...but here I am, still replaying that day over in my head...
