I Went Too Far With My Joke On A Patient's Birthday
Anonymous Smitten Busybody #363 · General
Last week was Mrs. Jenkins' 90th birthday. She's a lovely lady who always lights up the floor, but she can be a bit of a curmudgeon at times, not my favorite person to deal with when she’s in one of her moods. I thought it would be nice to do something special for her on her birthday, something that would show everyone we care about our patients here. I decided to decorate her room and bring in a small cake, along with balloons and flowers. However, as you might imagine, the decor can get a bit old after months of routine visits and hospital stays. I thought adding some fun twists could liven things up. So, I put together an elaborate gag involving helium-filled toy snakes that would 'attack' her when she opened the door to her room. I knew it was probably crossing the line from funny to inappropriate, but it seemed like such a clever idea at the time! I set everything up and went to check on other patients while my shift started properly. An hour later, as I was passing by Mrs. Jenkins' room again, there were nurses rushing out and another nurse yelling into her phone that an ambulance needed to be called. Of course, it turned out the prank had gone too far; one of those snakes got tangled up with some oxygen tubes and almost cut off her air supply. It was a total panic situation, everyone was flustered trying to untangle everything while making sure Mrs. Jenkins stayed safe. I felt so guilty after that moment. I had meant well, but good intentions can still cause major trouble if you're not careful. After the day settled down and she was okay, I went straight to apologize to her and my colleagues. It’s funny how something you think is a joke can have real consequences, especially when it's about someone else's safety. I hope that by sharing this story, it might help others understand why it's important to keep patient care safe above all else, even if trying to make patients happy feels like the right thing to do. Maybe next time I'll stick to more traditional birthday celebrations with flowers and cards.
