The Lie That Wasn't Worth It

I'm in my mid-40s and have always prided myself on being honest. I pride myself on integrity, but sometimes that doesn't come easily. Last week at work, I was running late for a meeting with the boss. I knew I would be late, and it's not like there was any good reason to explain my tardiness, no car troubles, just oversleeping and overthinking too much before heading out the door. So, I called ahead and told him that I had an emergency at home. He understood, but I could hear a hint of disappointment in his voice. Why did I do it? Was it because I didn't want to look lazy or unprepared for my meeting? Or was it just pure selfishness, trying to avoid the awkwardness and stress of explaining what really happened? Either way, it felt cheap. I ended up feeling worse than if I had just admitted to oversleeping. Now every time I'm late or miss something important at work, that little lie echoes back at me like a reminder. It's funny how sometimes the smallest fib can weigh heavier on your conscience than you'd ever think.
