When My Love for Pina Coladas Got Me In Trouble

I know I'm not the typical grandpa or grandma type, but since my 50s began, I've developed a bit of a sweet tooth for something a little stronger than milkshakes and pastries. It all started last summer when I was visiting my sister's house in Florida. She had these massive pina coladas that she would make from scratch with tons of rum and fresh ingredients. At first, I enjoyed them responsibly, maybe one or two during the day while we were relaxing by the pool. But then came Labor Day weekend and an office party back home where someone brought a huge punch bowl filled with what looked like just another fancy drink. Before you know it, I was sneaking sips between conversations. The real trouble began when my wife started noticing my slightly slurred speech and drowsiness during our evening strolls at home. She's always been more of an iced tea gal anyway but decided to bring up the topic one night over dinner. We had a long talk about my drinking habits, and I felt terrible knowing that something so small could make her worry. What I confess now isn't just about me liking pina coladas; it's also about how even as an adult in your 50s, you can get caught up in what seems like harmless fun. You see, while we're out at dinner one night after making this pact to be more mindful of our alcohol intake, I end up sneaking my favorite drink into the restaurant in a large water bottle disguised as lemonade. As we're walking back home from the restaurant under the moonlight, I feel it hit me like a ton of bricks: no matter how fun or innocent something might seem at first, honesty and responsibility are key. My wife hasn't said anything since then, but her raised eyebrow speaks volumes when she catches me pouring out my hidden drink. So here's to learning new lessons in life, even if it means admitting I need help cutting back on the pina coladas.
