I Lied About Knowing Excel

So I just started my first job at this super cool tech company, and honestly, I'm feeling so excited! Everyone here seems to be really chill, but also kind of know their stuff. On the second day, we had a meeting about getting up to speed on all the tools they use. Our boss said, 'We expect everyone to have basic Excel skills by the end of the week.' Now, I’ve never actually used Excel in my life. Back in school, when people talked about spreadsheets and data analysis, it just seemed boring to me. So, there's no way I’m going to be able to know Excel by Friday! But during lunch today, another new hire was talking about how they could breeze through the test next week since they already knew a lot of stuff from their old job. I felt so small then. What if people thought I wasn’t good enough? So, when someone asked me if I had any experience with Excel at all, I said 'Oh yeah, I used it a bit in college for some projects.' But that’s not true at all! It was such a tiny lie, but now I feel like an idiot. Now everyone thinks I’m this super proficient user, and every time someone asks me about my experience with Excel or offers to show me how to do something basic, I just smile nervously. And you know what’s funny? This is probably the most stressful part of starting a new job, this little white lie. I should have been more honest, but now that this isn’t a secret anymore, maybe it will help me learn faster and actually get better at Excel! At least there are plenty of online tutorials out there to catch up.
