The Milk Trick

So yeah, I admit it, last week, when my toddler asked me to get her a glass of milk before bedtime and was super excited about it, I ended up giving her water instead. The thing is, we were completely out of milk and the grocery store was closed already. And as much as I hate fibbing to my kids, this time, I just couldn't face making her cry over having no milk. I knew she would be disappointed or sad at first, but when I saw her little eyes get big with joy when she tasted what she thought was her usual bedtime drink, well, it felt like a win. She was happy, and that's all that mattered to me right then. Plus, we got lucky, the water in our house tastes really good, so she didn't notice at all. I've tried telling myself this isn't a big deal because I did what I thought was best for her in the moment, but every time she looks at the empty kitchen counter and asks where the milk is, it reminds me of my little white lie. Still, I think I'd do it again if I had to.
