I Gave Up on Discipline

Mrs. Lee here. Yeah, I know, teachers are supposed to enforce rules and keep order in class. But today, when Mr. Thompson’s history class turned into chaos again, I couldn't take it anymore. Kids yelling, desks rolling across the floor, papers flying everywhere. It was like they were having a party in my classroom. So, I just...gave up. Sat on the edge of my desk and watched them, hoping if I ignored it long enough, they’d calm down by themselves. One kid tried to ask me what we’re doing today but I waved him off with a smile. ‘It’s free day,’ I said. No one expected that, so everyone was confused at first, then they got into it even more! They started talking about homework less and sharing fun stories more. After class, the students actually thanked me for letting them be themselves for once. But now I'm worried. Is this normal? Do other teachers do this too when they’re overwhelmed? What should I tell the principal if he asks?
