My First Day At My New Job Was a Disaster

I started my new job at the local library today. I thought it would be easy and fun, but everything went wrong from the start. First, I got lost on my way there and was late for orientation. When I finally made it in, everyone looked up as if they were expecting someone else. The manager gave me a tour of the place, which I mostly zoned out because I was so nervous about screwing something up. During my first shift, I accidentally put a book back on the wrong shelf when a patron asked for help. And then it got worse, I spilled coffee all over the cataloguing computer and broke one of the laptops trying to clean it up! At lunchtime, I tried making small talk with some coworkers but ended up saying something really stupid that made everyone laugh awkwardly. By the end of my shift, I was a total wreck. The other employees were very kind about it all, which just made me feel worse for being such an idiot. I spent the whole ride home wondering if they thought I was incompetent or if I even had a future here at all. I’m hoping tomorrow goes better, but I can’t shake this feeling of dread and failure. Now every time I think about going back to work, my stomach twists into knots.
