The Day I Went Overboard With My Coworker's Water Bottle

So here's my confession. This week at work has been super slow and dull, nothing major happens, just answering emails and filling out forms for a few hours each day. On Thursday, though, I decided to shake things up in the most petty way possible. Our office is small with only six of us sharing one big space. We all have our own water bottles or cups on our desks. Well, mine was empty that morning and I didn't feel like going out for a refill. Then I noticed my coworker, Mark's, bottle had some left in it. Now, don't get me wrong; we're all friendly enough at work, but no one really goes out of their way to be chatty with the others beyond basic pleasantries and task-related conversations. This kind of petty behavior should never happen between colleagues who supposedly respect each other's boundaries. Anyway, so here I am, looking over my desk at Mark's nearly full bottle, contemplating a quick grab-and-go. But then something in me thought that would be too obvious, maybe even rude. So instead, I decided to take the water and refill it with tap water from our shared dispenser right next to us. By doing this, I convinced myself it was like I never took his actual drink. I refilled Mark's bottle so he wouldn't notice any difference when he got back from his lunch break. But then I realized how incredibly childish this whole situation is. It’s petty and a little mean-spirited. Sure enough, when Mark came back to the office later that day, I watched him as he took a sip of what was still in his water bottle, me pretending to do work on my computer with one eye flicking towards him out of the corner. His expression showed confusion at first and then mild annoyance as if something tasted off. I'm not proud of this behavior or why I did it, but honestly, even after everything played out, there was a part of me that felt a weird thrill from getting away with something underhanded. It’s like one of those moments when you see in movies where the villain cackles and clutches their chest because they've messed with someone's head. Looking back at it now, I feel a mix of embarrassment for acting so petty and irritation that I let my boredom get the better of me to this extent. If anyone were to ask why I did something like that in such an ordinary week at work, I wouldn't have an answer beyond some deep-seated need for mischief. In summary: It's hard to justify actions motivated purely by a desire for small-scale revenge or boredom-relief when they don’t make sense rationally. This is just another reminder of the human capacity for self-destructive whimsy at times.
