I Was That Mom Who Stole The Halloween Candy Barrels From School

So here’s the thing. My kid has this school where they do a Halloween candy barrel fundraiser for charity. You know, those barrels you see around where kids donate their leftover candy? Well, my little one was super excited about it and had been saving her favorite treats to put in there. She came home on Tuesday after the holiday with only like three pieces of candy left, and I was so upset because we’d just bought all this stuff for the barrel. So then, while taking her to drop off her school supplies at the start of the year, I notice these big barrels sitting out by the door, totally unattended. They were just there on a table with no teacher watching over them or anything. And it was raining too, so they had those little plastic covers on top that you can lift off easily. I couldn’t believe what an opportunity this was. My heart started racing because I thought about how many parents might do the same thing, grabbing handfuls of candy for their own kids without anyone noticing. So I did it too, but just a bit. Just enough to feel like we were evening things out a little after that one poor night when she had almost no candy left at home. But then yesterday? My kid came running in with her eyes wide and cheeks flushed red as she told me how some other kids caught someone stealing from the barrels and they were all upset. I felt so bad, but also weirdly thrilled by it. I mean, I know taking anything isn’t right, but when there’s no one watching, and everyone is doing it? It makes me feel better about my little crime. So yeah, that’s the confession, I took some candy from those barrels for Halloween to even out what we had lost. And honestly, it felt pretty good at the time. But now I’m conflicted too because I know how much those kids were looking forward to contributing and seeing their efforts help others.
