The Barista's Rebellion Against The Regulars' Expectations

I’ve been working at this coffee shop for about a year now. I thought I had found my perfect job where I could chat with people, make delicious drinks, and enjoy the small-town vibe. However, it turned out that some of our regular customers have very specific expectations and not-so-subtle ways of letting me know when I don’t meet them. The main culprit is this woman named Linda who comes in almost every day at 8 AM like clockwork for her large cappuccino. Now, don't get me wrong, Linda’s nice enough, but she has this list of preferences that are more like demands: no milk foam on top, extra vanilla syrup, and absolutely no chocolate chips in the latte I sometimes recommend when it’s a cool day. One day, I was feeling particularly put-upon by all her rules. I’m just trying to make a coffee, for crying out loud! So instead of asking if she wanted her usual (which is what customers always want, right?), I decided to mix things up and gave her the latte with chocolate chips. When she saw it, you could almost see steam come out of her ears. 'What in heaven’s name are these doing here?' she asked, pointing at the chips like they were cockroaches invading her home. I told her I thought it was a nice change for such a cool morning and suggested she try it. Of course, Linda just huffed and went back to work without even trying it, leaving a small tip on the counter that seemed more punitive than generous. But you know what? In that moment, something inside me clicked. This isn’t about pleasing one customer with their picky preferences; this is about doing my job and offering different options. So next time she comes in, I’m going to hand her a medium cappuccino instead of a large just because. I know it’s not the best professional move, but sometimes you have to stick up for yourself. Plus, isn’t life too short to cater to everyone else's whims all day long?
