When I Borrowed My Granddaughter's Doll Without Asking

I have always felt that my granddaughter, Lily, was closest to me when we played with her dolls. We would sit in the living room for hours pretending they were babies and talking about their pretend lives. It's such a sweet little time in our day together. Last week, I decided it would be fun to bring one of her dolls along on my errands. You know how sometimes you get that feeling that something will make your day better? That’s the way I felt about carrying around this cute doll with me all afternoon. Little did I know what was in store. As soon as I got back home, Lily wanted to check if her dolls were okay since they had been out of sight for a few hours. Of course, one was missing, mine! At first, she didn’t seem worried because she thought maybe the doll went to sleep somewhere or needed a nap. But when we looked everywhere and couldn't find it, her eyes started welling up with tears. We ended up finding it under my car seat when I was getting out later that evening, but in those moments of searching together, I felt so terrible. Now I worry if this is something she’ll remember negatively for years to come or if we can laugh about it eventually. Was taking the doll really such a big deal? On one hand, I feel like it’s just an object and I was just trying to add some fun to my day. On the other, Lily trusts me to keep her things safe, and maybe what she needs from me is less of a toy-carrying grandparent and more someone who helps create a sense of security around her favorite belongings. So, am I being too sensitive about how this went down? Or do kids actually take these little moments really seriously and I should have been better prepared for them to feel upset when they couldn’t find their doll immediately? What’s the best way forward from here? We’ve talked it through, but I can't help but think she’s going to be worried about her dolls ‘running away’ every time we’re together now.
