I Lied About My Car Insurance...

So here's the thing. I've got this car that's getting a bit long in the tooth, you know? The paint is scratched up and some parts under the hood are starting to rust through. It still runs like a champ though, and I love it because it was my grandma's before me... But insurance is so expensive these days, especially for older models. So last year when I got my policy renewed, there was this new clause about the value of the car being lower than its repair costs. The insurer wanted to reevaluate how much coverage I should have based on that... Now, here's where it gets interesting. They sent me a letter saying they would only cover up to 70% of my car's worth now, since repairs might not be cost-effective anymore. That meant paying more out-of-pocket if anything happened... But there was this loophole I remembered from my days as an insurance temp back in college. You can overestimate the value slightly on these forms and they usually don't question it too much... So one evening, after a long day of work, I sat down with that letter and started thinking about how I could keep my payments at their current level... And then I did it. I filled out the form, but instead of being honest, I put in an inflated number for its market value. It was technically still within reason, but definitely higher than what they'd appraise... I got a call back from the insurance agent asking me to clarify why there was this discrepancy, but I had my story ready. Told her it's been sitting under a tarp all winter and that some parts were missing in their appraisal report... They sent out an adjuster anyway, but she never asked any follow-up questions after walking around... Looking back, yeah, it feels a bit shady to lie about something like this, especially since I know someone will get hurt if the car breaks down or gets wrecked and my insurance doesn't cover it properly. But...I just couldn't stomach that hit in savings every month... Am I really that selfish? It's hard for me to admit even to myself...
