The Loneliest Shift Ever
Anonymous Suspicious Busybody #188 · General
I work the night shift at a small convenience store. It's usually quiet, but tonight was different, not just because it was eerily empty, but because I couldn't stop thinking about how my old high school friends are probably out having fun while I'm stuck here counting inventory and staring at a clock that moves too slowly. The silence is deafening, broken only by the occasional hum of the refrigerator or the sound of me shuffling papers for no reason other than to feel like I’m doing something productive. Every time my phone pings with notifications from social media, telling me about parties and adventures, I just sigh and put it back in my pocket. It’s not that I don’t have friends now; I do, but they work during the day too, so we rarely get to see each other outside of work. Tonight, though, I really miss those silly late-night conversations and feeling like there was always something fun happening around us. Do any of you out there feel this way sometimes? How do you cope with it when it hits?
