The Great Sibling Feud and My Role in It

I've been a stay-at-home parent for the past three years now, and honestly, I love it. Raising my kids is rewarding but exhausting sometimes. Today though, I’m here to confess something about my relationship with my brother, who lives nearby with his family. We’ve always had our fair share of arguments, nothing too serious until this week. The thing that really set me off was a comment he made at the family gathering last weekend. He said something about how it’s good for kids to ‘toughen up’ and not everything can be fixed with a Band-Aid or a hug, which got under my skin because I’ve always been there for my own children emotionally as well as physically. But you know what really rubbed me the wrong way? It was when he told my sister-in-law that she should encourage her kids to fight their battles alone more often. This came at a time when we were discussing how to deal with our youngest's fear of spiders, which is something I’ve been trying to help him overcome gently and patiently. After the gathering, I stewed on his comments for days before responding. My reply was sharp, pointing out that my approach has always worked better because kids need a balance of resilience AND support. But in my haste, I forgot about one crucial detail: my brother is very close with our parents and tends to be their main confidant when it comes to family issues. And what did I do? Of course, I hit send before double-checking if this would cause trouble. I’m not sure if the message crossed paths with him sharing something sensitive about my kids that he thought needed more of a ‘tough love’ approach, but our parents were caught in the middle. Our mom called me to tell me that she thinks I overstepped by airing grievances and criticizing parenting choices so bluntly. She even suggested that maybe we should just avoid each other for a while. So now here I am, wondering how one offhand comment at family gatherings can turn into a major rift in the family dynamic. Maybe I didn’t need to go all-in with my opinion, but it felt important at the time. Now, I’m left questioning if staying silent could have prevented this or if sometimes you just have to speak up for what you believe is right, no matter how rocky the consequences might be. Anyway, that’s where I am now. My kids are mostly clueless about all of this drama but it does weigh on my mind, especially knowing how close we were before everything went sideways.
