New Job Meltdown

Anonymous Meddling Charmer #193 · General

I started my first job as an office assistant at this big tech company. It was on Monday and I thought everything would go smoothly because I prepared a lot over the weekend, including reviewing all the company's guidelines and learning basic computer skills that were required. But then came Wednesday morning when the fire alarm went off during our daily stand-up meeting in the conference room. Instead of following the emergency procedures outlined in my training materials, panic set me into this frantic state where I just ran out with everyone else without paying attention to which way was safe or where the designated assembly point was. By the time we reached outside and I tried to figure everything out amidst all the commotion and confusion, I ended up getting separated from our group. I felt so foolish when a security guard found me wandering around aimlessly like that; he had to guide me back to rejoin my coworkers for roll call. It was embarrassing being called out in front of everyone and having them watch as a new face showed them what not to do during an emergency drill. I've been more prepared ever since.
