Why I Secretly Read My Kid's Diary

So I admit it, I've been sneaking a peek at my kid's diary. I know it sounds creepy and unethical, but there was this nagging feeling in the back of my mind that she might be keeping secrets from us or hiding something important. Every time I catch myself doing it though, I feel so guilty. What kind of parent is looking through their child’s personal thoughts? But then again, if there's a real issue at stake, wouldn't any parent do what they could to protect their kid? It’s like this weird mix of wanting to know everything about them and respecting their privacy. So here’s my question for all you parents out there, have you ever found yourself doing something similar or been tempted to just to make sure your kids are okay?
