Customer's Expectations and My Limits

I work at this little bookstore downtown. It’s been there for years and we get a lot of regulars who have their own preferences. They come in, they know exactly what they want and it doesn’t matter if you’re new or just trying to help out. Last week was particularly busy. We had a sale going on and people were coming in with coupons, lists, and kids in tow. I was the only one there that day who knew the layout well enough to keep up with everyone’s demands. But then this customer came in. She was new but walked around like she owned the place. I noticed her right away because she had a list as long as my arm and seemed ready for battle. The books were scattered all over, some on sale, some out of stock, and I was already sweating from just being there. But here comes this lady, clipboard in hand, eyes scanning everything with that look of determination. I tried to help her but every book she wanted wasn’t there or the wrong edition. ‘Do you have any idea how hard it is for me to find books now? ’ She snapped at one point and I froze. It was just too much pressure from a customer who obviously felt entitled to something that wasn’t available. That night, I couldn’t stop thinking about her, or the look on other customers’ faces when she left in frustration. They all looked so disappointed and sad as if someone had stolen their favorite toy. And then there was me, feeling like I failed everyone that day. It’s not that I didn’t want to help; it’s just getting harder to balance everything with the expectations of perfection from customers who don’t see behind the scenes. The stacks of unsold books in the back, the endless phone calls about orders, and trying to keep up with new releases while keeping the old ones in stock too. Maybe I should have talked to my boss or the customer more. But now that day just hangs over me like a cloud ready to rain at any moment. Sometimes it feels like there’s no point anymore when all I do is disappoint people, whether they know it or not.
