...I Think I'm Overparenting Again...

So this happened yesterday at my son's soccer practice. He's only four, but he loves playing on the field and making friends. It was a beautiful afternoon, and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, until I overheard another kid telling his friend that they wanted to score goals. My little guy, who usually just runs around laughing and trying to kick the ball whenever it comes near him, suddenly stopped smiling. He turned to me with a worried look on his face, asking if he had to try hard to do what the other kids were doing. But I also knew that if I stepped in too strongly, I'd just reinforce his worry about what others think of him. So instead, I took a deep breath and decided to try something different. ... I grabbed a ball and pretended like it was just another play session with him. We started passing back and forth gently, then rolling the ball around on the grass together. He was giggling again by the time we finished, little victories, little joys, you know? I explained later that his job wasn't to keep up with other kids but to enjoy himself...but also he could learn new things if he wanted to. ... I'm not sure how it'll go in future practices. Maybe I overreacted completely and should've let him figure out on his own, or maybe stepping in like this was exactly what he needed today. Sometimes when you're a parent, you just have to wing it and hope for the best. ... It's funny how much your mindset shifts from day-to-day as someone who cares so deeply about these little humans. One minute you're trying to keep them safe, then the next you want to give them all the freedom in the world to make their own choices. It's a tightrope walk. ...
