Parent Trap Fails

Oh my goodness, I don't even know where to start. So let's see, it was the day of the big school dance, and as a parent of two teenagers, you'd think I'd be excited for them. But really, all I could think about was making sure they didn't end up in situations that were, well, too... adult for their age. Anyway, my son had been talking non-stop about this girl he liked for weeks now, and I couldn't help but overhear a few conversations where it sounded like she might have plans to meet him at the dance. Now, being the overprotective parent that I am, I thought it would be a good idea to set up a little trap - you know, a decoy date or something to keep them from actually getting together. So here's where my plan falls apart: I ended up calling my daughter’s friend's mom and convincing her to pretend she was the girl he liked. And then there was this mix-up with the wrong phone numbers, and before I knew it, poor Alex (my son) showed up at a completely different school for his 'date'! Needless to say, when the real girl found out what happened, she wasn't too happy with me or Alex. The next day, Alex came home looking like he'd been hit by a truck, and I had no idea how to explain why there was an extra set of flowers sitting on our kitchen counter. But you know what? If anything good has come out of this fiasco, it's that both my kids now have excellent stories for their future therapy sessions. And maybe next time, I'll just stick to being a parent and not some kind of secret undercover matchmaker with no idea how social media works.
