I'm a Mess When It Comes to Coffee Mugs

I bought this super trendy mug from my favorite cafe. First use? Spilled coffee all over it because I was holding my laptop and cell phone too. Now I wonder if anyone else out there actually manages to use their fancy mugs without spilling or is it just me? Advice?
