The Coffee Conundrum at Work

So, I work the night shift at a small café near a college campus. It's mostly quiet until around 2 AM when all the students start trickling in for last-minute caffeine before their early classes. Now, there’s this one regular customer named Sam who always orders an extra-large black coffee with no sugar or cream, just pure bitter liquid to wake them up. They never seem to care about any spills because they’re always so focused on getting back to the library or dorms quickly for some last-minute studying. One night, while I was rushing around trying to keep up with a busy evening shift, I accidentally knocked over Sam's coffee right after they ordered it but before I had a chance to give it to them. It splattered all over their notebook and papers that were sitting on the counter. Oh boy, talk about awkward. I immediately apologized, but there was no way we could salvage their work from the spilled coffee. I offered to make them another cup for free, but it didn't seem like it would fix things since they needed to get back home or to the library right away. They muttered something about having a big test tomorrow and stormed out of the café. Later that night when things calmed down, I was still feeling pretty bad about what happened. I considered trying to reach out to Sam with an apology message or offering them some sort of compensation for their lost work. But then again, how often do you apologize or try to make it up to someone after a clumsy mistake? Would they even want me to? It's funny how one little accident can mess up the whole night. I feel bad about it but also wonder if sometimes we just have to live with these things and move on. Maybe next time, I'll be more careful. Or maybe I’ll just offer a free pastry instead, because who doesn’t love pastries? That seems less risky. Anyway, that's my coffee spill story from the night shift. Anybody else ever had something similar happen to them at work?
