I Spoke Up for Myself in Class Today ...

So today was pretty typical. You know how it is; you're trying to focus on the lesson but your mind just wanders a bit, especially when there's not much engagement from the teacher. I sat there listening half-heartedly as Ms. Thompson lectured about the importance of participation and being vocal in class. It's like she was reading my personal weaknesses out loud or something... I mean, normally, I don't mind just sitting back and taking notes. But lately, everyone seems to have these crazy opinions that they're sharing left and right. They all look so confident raising their hands and talking about stuff... I can feel myself getting a little envious, but also self-conscious because I never do anything like that... But today was different for me. The class had been debating this new book we read on the themes of friendship and loyalty. Everyone else was talking about how unrealistic it all seemed in certain parts or how some characters acted out of character at times. And I just... didn't really agree with them. I mean, I get that there are inconsistencies sometimes when you're reading something. But to me, there were moments where the characters did things that felt true for them and it wasn't about realism, but about capturing the human experience in a way that feels relatable even if it's not perfect... And so, as much as I was thinking, 'Oh no, am I going to sound dumb?', I decided just to speak up. I raised my hand, and when Ms. Thompson called on me, I explained what I thought about those particular parts of the book. It felt really good actually. Like I finally allowed myself that little voice in my head to be heard out loud... But honestly? There's a small part of me that's also kind of annoyed at how relieved I feel because now everyone will know I'm not just some quiet, passive student. So maybe there was a tiny bit of selfishness too... It might sound petty or unnecessary for most people, but for me, it felt like this big step towards being more comfortable in my own skin and speaking up when things matter to me.
