I Broke My Dad's Old Phone and Lied About It

So here's the thing, I inherited my dad's old phone because he got a new one. This was about three months ago, and the phone is ancient compared to what we use now. But I didn't want it because it was clunky and outdated, so I just kept putting off learning how to use it. Then today, I went through my dad's old stuff while he wasn’t looking, and somehow ended up dropping his phone on a really hard floor. The screen cracked, and it wouldn't turn on anymore. Panic set in, how was I going to tell him? Instead of owning up, I decided to say that the battery died. I know I shouldn't have lied. It feels heavy, knowing I messed something up and couldn’t just admit what happened. But my dad would be so disappointed because he was hoping I could actually use his old phone. Now I'm left with this tiny lie hanging over me, making everything awkward when we talk. I don't want him to think I ruined one of his possessions out of carelessness or disrespect, but how do you tell someone about something like that without it sounding so much worse? Am I the asshole here for lying in the first place, or is there a way to fix this without making things more tense than they need to be?
