I Joined the Wrong Online Hobby Group by Accident and Kept Attending Meetings

So this happened recently. I picked up woodworking as my new hobby, thinking it would be a great way to unwind after work and maybe make some cool things for around the house. One day, while browsing through Facebook groups, I clicked on what looked like an ad that was actually the group invite link for the local chess club instead of the woodworkers' guild. Oh boy, was I in for it. I accidentally joined the wrong online group and started attending their weekly Zoom meetings as a regular member for weeks before realizing my mistake. At first, I thought maybe it would be okay to just stick around and learn about chess since I'd heard it's great for brain fitness. But after a few sessions where everyone was talking in jargon like 'en passant' and 'queen pawn openings,' I realized I should have figured out what group I was really in much sooner. I tried not to draw too much attention to myself by asking obvious questions or admitting my error, but it must have been noticeable how lost I felt every week. The chess club members are super nice though and would help explain things whenever they saw me confused. Still, the longer this went on, the more embarrassed I was about accidentally joining them instead of my real hobby group. Eventually one day during a lull in conversation while we were setting up for our meeting, someone asked if there were any new members who wanted to introduce themselves. Oh no... My heart sank as I figured out it was time for me to reveal the truth and bail before anyone noticed something weird going on. So I awkwardly confessed that this wasn't really my hobby at all and I had been attending by mistake for weeks. They just laughed and said they'd seen the clueless looks before and weren't too surprised. It's funny how something so simple as clicking a link wrong can end up being such an embarrassing experience, especially in front of people who clearly knew way more about chess than I ever would. But hey, at least it was a learning experience on both sides, now I'm a bit better at recognizing the difference between group pages for different hobbies before joining them! 🤦♂️
