The Perils of Being Too Nice at Work...

So here's the thing... I work at this bookstore, you know, that cozy place with bookshelves everywhere and a comfy little reading nook by the window. It's kind of my dream job if I'm honest... but it's not all rainbows and kittens like in the movies. You see, there's this one customer who comes in every few days to browse through books. He always picks up multiple copies of the same book and spends ages weighing his options before putting them back on the shelf. I've seen him do this for months now... It's frustrating because he takes a lot of my time without actually buying anything. But here's where it gets tricky, okay? See, one day, he came in again with his usual routine and as always, I smiled politely while he was there. But then... something weird happened inside me. Maybe it was the fourth or fifth week of this routine, but for some reason, I snapped into this overcompensating mode where I wanted to be extra nice and helpful. I started recommending books to him left, right, and center, anything that might interest him based on what he had already looked at. And you know how it goes... the more books I suggested, the more confused he seemed. He ended up putting every single one back without buying anything... But here's where it gets really bad... I mean good intentions gone wrong bad. So this guy comes in today for his usual routine again. Except this time? Yeah, I went a bit too far. As he was browsing, trying to decide between two books that were literally identical copies of the same book (seriously! Identical editions), I decided it would be kind and helpful to offer him some more options. So... I started pulling out books from random shelves around the store, books on philosophy, self-help, even kids' picture books. You know how you do that thing where you grab a stack of books and just hand them over like 'Oh here! How about these?' Well, I did that and... it was an utter disaster. He ended up taking all those books back to the shelf too without buying any. But he left this time with that look in his eye like maybe he'll never come back again... I know it's not my place to force people into decisions or push them towards purchasing books they might regret later on, but at the same time, I just want customers happy and fulfilled by finding their perfect book. Now though? I'm left wondering if being overly helpful might actually be what keeps him away... ...
