Worst Lunchroom Performance Ever

I’m going to preface this by saying that I don’t really like singing in public. It’s not that I can’t carry a tune; it’s just that the idea of anyone else hearing me perform is enough to make my knees knock together. So, when our office decided to have an informal karaoke lunch last week, I’m looking at you, Karen, and asked if I’d sing something for everyone, my immediate response was a polite ‘no thank you.’ But alas, there’s no hiding from fate in the workplace. As it turned out, one of my colleagues had already signed me up to perform. And because nothing says fun like being forced into the spotlight, I decided to choose something that would ensure I could keep my dignity intact: a rendition of ‘I Will Survive’ by Gloria Gaynor. It was a bold choice for sure, considering the lyrics and all their talk about not needing men, let’s be real, it probably should have been interpreted as an office-wide joke, but hey, it made sense to me. Needless to say, I survived my performance, though maybe not in the way Gloria intended. Now, if only someone could explain to me why singing karaoke with colleagues is supposed to build morale.
