An Unfortunate Mix-Up at Work

I work as a bartender at a local bar, and tonight was one of those nights where everything seemed to go sideways. I started off fine, pouring drinks, chatting with customers, the usual stuff. But then came a regular named Sarah who ordered what she always gets: a vodka tonic. Normally, it's no big deal. However, earlier in my shift, our ice machine had broken down and we were running low on ice. I made her drink with just enough ice to keep things cool but not a full glass of cubes like usual. She didn't seem to notice at first, sipping away happily. A few minutes later, another regular named Jack came in. He's always ordering water because he's trying to stay hydrated without drinking alcohol. I quickly filled his cup with ice and poured some tap water over it for him. The trouble started when Sarah walked by my station at just the wrong moment. She picked up Jack’s glass of water and took a big sip before realizing her mistake. Her face went white as she spit out the mouthful and coughed violently, gagging on what tasted like vodka instead of water. I froze for a second before rushing over to check if she was okay. Sarah was furious, demanding an apology and compensation right there in front of everyone. I explained that it had been an honest mistake with no malice intended, but she wasn't having any of it until I took the night off to apologize properly. Jack, who hadn’t said a word throughout this ordeal, kindly tried to smooth things over with Sarah, explaining it was just one of those nights. She eventually calmed down enough to accept an apology and left without making too much of a scene. I ended up staying late after my shift to write out a sincere letter of apology for Sarah and a heartfelt thank you note to Jack for stepping in when I couldn’t think straight. Despite the awkwardness, both seemed grateful it had been resolved. It was just one of those nights that made me realize how important attention to detail is, especially in my line of work where small mistakes can have big consequences.
