I Spilled Coffee on a Customer's Laptop at Work

Today was one of those days where everything seems to go wrong, starting with the alarm not going off in the morning. I rushed into work late, my mind still half-asleep as I tried to catch up on orders and maintain some semblance of customer service despite feeling overwhelmed. The day picked up with a flurry of rush hour coffee orders, but then things took an unexpected turn. An older gentleman walked in, looking frazzled but polite, placing his order for a medium drip coffee. He was one of those regulars who always came in during the morning chaos and left quickly without lingering. I prepared his drink carefully, trying to keep my mind on autopilot due to my exhaustion. As I placed the lid on top, something clicked inside me; I must have been clumsy or distracted because the coffee cup slipped from my grip and splattered across the counter. In that moment of horror, my eyes widened as I watched the dark liquid make its way down towards a customer's laptop bag. The bag was open, revealing the shiny surface of what looked like an expensive laptop nestled inside. It happened so fast, I couldn't stop it. The coffee made direct contact with his device. I froze for a moment before leaping into action to clean up and try to salvage any damage, but deep down, I knew I'd ruined something significant. The man's expression was a mix of shock and dismay as he quickly lifted the laptop out of its bag to assess the damage. He asked if there were wet wipes nearby or anything that could help with cleaning it off, which I assured him we did have. We got some paper towels and tried our best, but it felt so inadequate. He thanked me for my efforts but was clearly upset about the situation. As he left, I couldn't shake the feeling of shame and guilt weighing heavily on me. It's not like it happens often, I'm usually very careful at work, but this time, something just went wrong in a way that could potentially cost someone quite a bit financially. I reported the incident to my manager right away, who was understanding but also stressed about how we might handle any potential fallout from this mistake. I felt like such an idiot for letting it happen and still can't figure out exactly why I dropped the cup. It's something that keeps replaying in my head, wondering if there was anything more I could have done to prevent it. Now every time I see a laptop bag at work, a knot of tension forms in my stomach.
