My Small White Lie to the Grocery Clerk
Anonymous Guilty Gossip #715 · General
I know I shouldn't, but every time I go grocery shopping with my toddler, I tell the clerk we just got back from a long vacation. My son's behavior can be... less than ideal in public places, and let's face it, most people don't like seeing kids act up or have meltdowns. So when someone asks why he's so tired and cranky, I say something along the lines of 'Oh, we just got back from a week-long trip!' It feels wrong to lie, but also strangely validating that my kid gets to pretend he was on vacation instead of dealing with the mundane stresses of home life. Plus, it usually gets me some sympathy points from fellow shoppers who give us a bit more space or patience.
