i made a bad call on my student

so yesterday was one of those days where everything seems to go wrong. i had this kid in my class, let's call him jake. jake is a tricky one because he can be really sweet and helpful but also has moments when he just doesn't listen or follow the rules. we were doing group projects on thursday, and jake was working with some other kids who are usually good at staying focused. but today it all went south. i had given them a worksheet to work on together during class time, simple stuff really. jake kept talking out of turn and not following along with the instructions. his friends got frustrated and told me they couldn't concentrate because he was being loud and disruptive. i tried to calm him down but it just made things worse. i ended up sending jake to the principal's office because honestly, at that moment i didn't know what else to do. after class, some of his classmates mentioned how mean i was for doing that. now i'm second guessing myself. is it normal to send a kid who keeps disrupting others to the principal? am i being too harsh or should i have handled things differently? i just can't shake this feeling like maybe there was something else i could've done. i wish there were more ways to handle kids like jake without making them feel so bad, but sometimes i don't know what else to do. any advice? am i overthinking this?
