I Might Be the One at School Who Ruins Everything for No Reason

So I’m a stay-at-home parent and my son goes to this school that feels like it’s part of our family. We’ve been there since he was in kindergarten, and even though most days go smoothly, there have been some major snags. It all started last year when we had this big fundraising event planned for the end of term. I had volunteered to help organize it because my son’s class was one of the beneficiary classes, and everyone was so excited about it that they asked me to head up a committee. But here’s where things went sideways. I thought it would be simple: get donations, plan activities, and make sure everything ran smoothly. Well, in hindsight, I might have taken on too much. When the day of the event arrived, we had tons of people signing up for activities, but there was a huge line at the refreshment stand where I was supposed to handle things. Things started to go awry right from the start. People were getting impatient as they waited in long lines, and even worse, some of the items weren’t prepared properly or were running low. The real kicker was when we ran out of ice for one of our main treats, a lemonade stand that I had hoped would bring us lots of funds. It didn’t help that it was so hot outside; without ice, everything melted into a watery disaster in minutes. To make things even worse, the person in charge of food forgot to bring enough napkins and utensils for everyone. By this point, kids were getting cranky and adults weren’t exactly happy either. Now, here’s where I’m not sure if I should feel guilty: when it was all over, people came up to me expressing their disappointment with the event. The feedback forms that parents filled out afterward had a lot of complaints about this or that gone wrong. And now every time we’re planning another school function, there’s a whisper among the PTA members who are looking at me like I’m the one causing all these mishaps. It just dawned on me, maybe they think it’s my fault everything seems to go south during events? But honestly, I try so hard to be supportive. Maybe I overdid it with the lemonade stand setup and underestimated how much ice we’d need. Or maybe planning an event for 150 people isn’t really something a stay-at-home parent like me should take on alone? Anyway, there you have it. My little confession that’s been weighing on my mind ever since. Am I the one who always manages to screw up things at school? It sure feels that way sometimes.
