I Wasn't the Perfect Grandparent Everyone Imagined Me to Be

Last summer, my grandson Tommy came to visit for a week. I was excited about his stay and wanted everything to be perfect, no arguments, no messes, nothing out of place. On the third day, he wanted us to go to the local ice cream parlor after lunch. It had been raining earlier, so we were still damp from the umbrella mishaps in the morning. I made sure he had a full meal and even packed an extra snack for him just in case. But when we got there, the line was long, and Tommy started whining about being cold and hungry again. I told him to be patient as I handed over my wallet and lined up with our tickets. While waiting, he kept asking if it would be a bit faster or shorter if we did something else instead. My patience wore thin by the time we reached the front counter where flavors were overwhelming in their variety. Tommy picked out two scoops, chocolate chip cookie dough and mint chocolate chip. As I was about to pay for our treats, my wallet slipped through an unexpected tear at the bottom corner. Money scattered everywhere amidst shocked gasps from people behind us. We rushed to pick up coins and bills as fast as we could, but it was a mess. Tommy looked so embarrassed, his face turning red. I hurriedly apologized while also handing over some cash I still had in hand and promised him that this wouldn't happen again. On the way back home, instead of offering comfort like I should have, I scolded him for whining earlier about how the line was too long and how wet we were when it rained. He didn’t say much on the ride home, but his silence was heavy. Reflecting on that day now, I realize that my perfectionism caused me to overlook a simple moment of joy with my grandson. Perhaps I should have been more understanding and less rigid about everything going perfectly smoothly. It’s hard to let go of control when you love someone so much.
