Spent an Entire Day Pretending to Work During My Boss's Vacation

So here’s a situation I’m pretty proud of actually. See, my boss is this really strict micromanager who seems to think the office should be 24/7 hustle and bustle. Anyway, last week she went on vacation for a whole week and basically left me in charge with a few other folks, but not telling us anything about where things stand or what’s expected of us. I was supposed to work from home that day, and I’m a decent enough worker so I always make sure to have my emails and such all neat and tidy. But guess what? The day before her vacation, I had gotten the flu, and boy did it hit me hard! So instead of working on all these projects she’s been breathing down our necks about, I decided to use this day off as a perfect opportunity to catch up on my binge-watching habit. I set up a couple of fake meetings via video call with my co-workers, they’re just as tired and overworked as me, so it didn’t take much convincing. Meanwhile, on my end, my TV was set to stream one show after another in a loop mode, so the screen never went black. And here’s where I think things got really clever: I had also connected my phone to the same Wi-Fi as my laptop and set up an automated message that would pop up every time someone sent me an email or IM, saying something like “Oooh sorry, was in a meeting!” I did feel a little guilty at first because there’s nothing worse than pretending during work hours when you should be productive. But after a while, I realized what my boss needs most is for her people to take care of themselves sometimes too! So yeah, by the end of that day, not only was I all caught up on some of my favorite shows but also felt much better from being sick. Sure, it’s cheating in a way, but when everyone else is pushing you beyond your limits, I think pulling back isn’t just allowed but necessary. Plus, what are the chances she’ll ever know? We haven’t had an official check-in since then and my flu seems to have left with that day off. And there it is, a full workday of streaming Netflix in the guise of working from home. Now who’s the asshole here?
