I Fessed Up Too Soon

Yesterday at work, I was late because my car battery died. Instead of admitting it, I lied and said there was a big construction delay on the highway. My boss bought it, nodding sympathetically. But then as soon as he turned around to his desk, I felt so guilty that I blurted out the truth. 'Actually,' I mumbled, 'I forgot to charge my phone overnight, but my car really did die.' Everyone froze and stared at me like I'd admitted to stealing office supplies or something. Turns out my white lie was worse than just owning up right away.
