The Great Office Cereal Heist

So here’s this thing I’m kind of embarrassed about from last month. At work, we have this big pantry where everyone keeps their snacks and stuff. I usually go there for my favorite cereal in the morning before heading to my desk. You know, those little packets of granola with the crunchy bits and nuts? Yum. But one day, a new intern joined us, and they were always there early, chatting up other people, kind of like how some folks try to charm their way into social circles. Now, I’m not the most outgoing person in the office, so naturally, I got a little territorial about my snack time. One morning, I arrived early too, grabbed my cereal packet, and was all set to enjoy my breakfast. But then I noticed something strange, the new intern was rifling through the pantry with a big grin on their face, pulling out several packets of that crunchy granola cereal. By the time they left for their desk, nearly half of them were missing. Now here’s where it gets interesting: at first, I felt pretty indignant about this and thought about telling someone right away. But then I had this momentary lapse in judgment. Instead of confronting the intern or bringing it up with anyone, I decided to play a little prank on them as payback. That night after work, I sneaked back into the office, I mean, who leaves their own workplace empty and unlocked anyway, and switched out all the other packets for some stale cereal that was at the bottom of my pantry cabinet. The next morning, everyone showed up early to get a quick breakfast before meetings started. The intern was there again, still grabbing cereals from the front but didn’t notice what I had done until they bit into one and saw it wasn’t as crunchy or fresh-tasting as expected. They looked around nervously for a moment, probably thinking someone noticed their earlier behavior too. I felt pretty clever at first. But later that day, when everyone started to grumble about the stale cereal packets and complained to HR, I realized how childish my actions were and how much trouble it could have caused me if anyone had found out. So now, every time I see the intern’s smile or smell that granola cereal in the pantry, I feel a bit guilty and hope nobody ever finds out about this little prank gone wrong. I mean, sure, I might seem like a jerk for doing something like that, but honestly, it’s just one of those moments when you get so caught up in your own thoughts that you forget what mature behavior looks like. Sometimes, being the bigger person isn’t as fun in the moment.
