I Made an Awkward Mistake at School Today

So, I was in the middle of lunch today, sitting with a few friends and talking about our plans for the weekend. Everything was going smoothly until my friend Jamie mentioned we should all go see that new movie coming out next week. I got really excited, it’s been on everyone's radar and seems pretty good based on what I've heard. But then something weird happened, my phone vibrated with a notification, and before I could look at the screen, I started blurting things like 'Yeah, totally going to see that movie! But first, gotta finish this episode of whatever show I’m currently binge-watching. Just gotta catch up on all my shows!' My friends were giving me these weird looks. And here’s where it gets worse, someone else at the table asked if anyone wanted to grab dinner before the movies, and in my nervousness, I blurted out 'Actually, can't do that because I have to prep for an exam. No time for socializing right now.' And Jamie, who knows me pretty well since we’ve been friends forever, just stared at me like I was from Mars. I wanted to crawl under a rock after that. But the real kicker came when someone else brought up joining them at the pool next weekend, and I somehow mixed it up with my swim class practice schedule in my head, saying 'Oh no, I have swim team practice all week! Can't make it.' Afterwards, I felt awful for the rest of lunch. They tried to cheer me up, but I couldn’t help feeling like an awkward mess. How could I go from excited about hanging out with friends to sounding so flakey and busy? I spent the rest of my classes trying to figure out how to make it right, but now they probably think I’m super serious or something. I just want to laugh at myself sometimes, here I am making a big deal over social plans, yet blowing off homework because I feel like TV is more important. So messed up. Anyway, maybe tomorrow I’ll start by sending a message that we should all definitely plan out those movie and pool days without my crazy brain interfering. Maybe things will get better if I just be me, the fun-loving one who also has her responsibilities under control, but somehow manages to keep things together when talking about plans with friends.
