I Lied About My Shift Being Covered

So here's this thing I did as a bartender that kind of bugs me but also makes me feel like the coolest person ever. You know how we all have those days when everything just goes to hell? That’s exactly what happened last week at work, only it wasn't just one of my usual tough shifts, it was three in a row because our manager called out sick and there were no backup bartenders scheduled. It felt like the apocalypse had struck, with long lines, impatient customers, and drinks that took an eternity to mix because I couldn’t remember which blender was free from all the chaos. Anyway, after finally surviving the last shift of those three back-to-back days, I was completely drained. Just looking at my phone for new texts gave me a headache. But you know what’s worse than being dead on your feet? Having to get up and do it again tomorrow morning. That's exactly what was staring at me, four hours before my next shift started that night. So here’s where I made the call, I texted our manager, told her there was an emergency with a family member who needed me right away. It felt like lying to your boss to skip work, but honestly? If someone had offered to cover for me in exchange for free drinks or maybe just one night off, I would have jumped at it. But no such luck; so my phone didn’t lie to them, and my brain definitely wasn't lying when I thought about how badly I needed a day to catch up on sleep. Now here’s where the story gets juicy, I hadn’t even dozed for five minutes before the doorbell rang with a delivery from one of those apps that lets you send flowers or cakes. The sender? My boss, thanking me for stepping in and saying she knew it was tough but appreciated my help. Talk about feeling like an ass; I didn't know whether to laugh at myself or be embarrassed all over again. So here’s the thing, I probably wouldn’t change a thing, because sometimes you just have to do what's best for your mental health. Or maybe that’s me rationalizing one of the worst calls I’ve made.
