The Patient Who Wouldn't Listen to Me...

So here's the thing, I'm this new nurse at the hospital. I started a couple of weeks ago, and so far it’s been pretty good, you know? Like any job, you get those days when everything is going wrong, but there was one particular patient who just... well, they were giving me fits. So let's set the scene. It was my shift at 11 PM on a Friday night, and I had this patient named Tom, an older gentleman in his late sixties with diabetes and heart issues. He was supposed to be following his strict diet but he kept sneaking candy and snacks that weren’t part of it. Every time I'd catch him... well, let's just say the conversations were not pleasant. I knew I had a responsibility to him, you know? His health was at stake here. But every time I tried talking to him about sticking to his diet, he would argue and say that it’s too strict or unreasonable. He’d get defensive and start making excuses... One night, after catching him eating cookies again (against my instructions), I couldn’t take it anymore. I was getting really frustrated because I felt like I wasn't being heard. So I did something, okay, let's be honest, I did something a bit over the top. When I saw his stash of candy hidden under his pillow, I... well, I took it and threw it away. Now, you can imagine how that went over. He was so angry! He yelled at me like it was my job to just hand out permission slips for junk food. I tried explaining myself, about why these rules exist in the first place, but he just wouldn't listen... I know this isn't exactly professional behavior, but part of me is thinking: if someone won't listen when you talk reasonably with them, what else can you do? And now every time I see him, it’s like walking on eggshells... Am I overreacting? Or was my method just too extreme? What would you all say in a situation like this? Have any of you ever had to deal with patients who refused care or advice?
