My Secret Snack Break

So, I'm this new guy at my first real job as a data analyst. You know how everyone says you should dress up nice and all that? Yeah, not me. I was late to the memo about business casual attire, somehow managed to show up in cargo shorts on day one of work-from-home. But let's get serious here; it’s been a week since I've officially started at my desk. And guess what? They didn't notice. Or care. At all. Anyway, the reason for this little tale isn’t about how I got away with wearing cargo shorts. No, that’s just background noise in the grand scheme of things. The real confession is something I did today, and let's face it, it was petty as hell but also necessary because… snacks. We have these strict snack rules at work. It’s all about staying healthy, no chips or candy allowed during meetings. Now, don’t get me wrong; I’m all for health stuff. Just not when it comes to my lunch breaks and the munchies I crave. So here’s what happened: During a meeting this afternoon, our team lead mentioned that there would be a surprise snack day next Friday if we met certain productivity goals. But being new and all, I didn’t really know anyone yet, let alone have someone who would bring me in on the inside scoop of these unspoken rules. And then came the moment of truth, literally during lunch time, our supply closet door was left open for a bit. And there it sat, staring back at me with its tantalizing snacks: bags and bags of chips, cookies, you name it. I couldn’t resist any longer. So in went my hand, out came a bag of Doritos. I thought about putting them away, but what if the door closed before then? What if someone saw me returning this delicious haul back to its rightful place? The panic was real, and so were those chips now nestled safely inside my backpack. So here I am, confessing this little white lie. Because while I enjoyed my secret snack break, because yes, it really did feel like a break despite not eating them in front of anyone, I can’t help but think: Did I just undermine the whole team morale and set us back on those productivity goals? But hey, at least now I know for sure that there’s no real consequence to breaking these rules. Maybe next time it’ll be healthier stuff… or maybe not. And so here ends my first week of work and a small victory in the great battle between official policy and human nature.
