Missing Home Cooking

I've been at college for a month now and I love it, really. Meeting new people, joining clubs, it's all exciting. But there’s this persistent feeling gnawing at me. Last night, my roommate made pizza from scratch because we were craving it, but no matter how good it was, it just wasn’t the same as when Mom would make her special tomato sauce with that one spice she only uses for pizza nights. I used to think college food and home cooking were interchangeable, but turns out I was wrong. It’s funny how a simple meal can feel like such an achievement here, when back at home, it was just another day of us laughing around the kitchen table while she worked her magic. Today, I find myself sneaking into the grocery store to buy all the ingredients I need for her recipe. Maybe tonight I’ll try making it again, hoping that a whiff of garlic and tomato sauce might transport me back home for just a moment.
