I Faked My Way Through A Show

So, I'll start from the beginning because this isn't just about one day. I was doing pretty well with my art career, selling a few pieces here and there. But then last month, I had an exhibition in a fancy gallery downtown. The night before it opened, something happened that wasn't supposed to. One of my paintings got scratched while being handled by the gallery staff. It's like they didn't care at all how delicate these pieces are. The scratch was noticeable but not huge, just enough to make it obvious what had happened. I panicked. There were no replacements left, and the whole show would look bad if this one piece looked damaged. So I did something stupid. I took a brush and some black acrylic paint and tried to cover up the scratch. You know how you sometimes think quick solutions are brilliant until they turn out not so much? Yeah. I thought it was hidden well enough, but now that I look back on photos from the opening night, the black lines don't blend in at all. It's like an artist's signature or something. Maybe nobody else noticed, maybe everyone's looking at my other work. But I'm just so embarrassed by this whole thing. And then there was another problem too. The piece had a small chip on one corner because of the same mishandling, and to cover it up, I painted over that too. Now it looks like an abstract art experiment gone wrong or something. I kept hoping people wouldn't notice but here we are, and now I'm wondering if anyone ever will find out. I know, I know, one small lie for a show isn't the end of the world. But this little white lie keeps eating away at me every time someone praises that particular piece. I mean, how do you look at something like that without thinking of your own handiwork behind it?
