The Unnecessary Lie About the Milk
Anonymous Tipsy Snitch #344 · General
I'm Sarah, and I've been a stay-at-home parent for three years now. Every day is full of small decisions that accumulate into these massive chunks we call life. Today's confession is about a seemingly tiny lie I told my husband this morning. It may seem like nothing to some, but it's bothering me because it was so unnecessary and pointless. I woke up early today, as always, and went straight for the kitchen to make coffee. We've been having one of those weeks where things are tight on groceries; we just need a quick trip to the store once payday comes around next week. My first target was our milk carton in the fridge, it's almost empty, so I decided to sneak out to get some more after my morning cup. As I reached for it though, there was this weird slimy feeling on one side of the box. I got nervous. Was that old yogurt? Had someone spilled something and forgotten about it? So instead of going out, I poured myself a coffee, took out the box to check, and saw nothing but an almost empty carton with no signs of contamination. Feeling guilty for potentially overreacting or worrying him unnecessarily, I quickly thought I'd just grab another container to keep things simple. But then it occurred to me, what if he asks about the milk in the next hour? Will he think I'm incompetent and that I let us run out again? So when we met in the kitchen half an hour later for breakfast, I casually told him that a new box of milk had arrived yesterday afternoon. He nodded and seemed satisfied, but all I could think about was how stupid this lie really was. There's nothing wrong with us being short on groceries; it happens to everyone. Why did I feel the need to cover up such a tiny thing? It wasn't even going to be a big deal once he found out. But here I am, stuck in my head all day because of this small white lie. Is it really so bad to just tell him the truth and work together to solve it instead of lying about something trivial?
