The Jelly Bean Lie

So here's the thing. I work at a small office and every year around Easter, we all get these cute little baskets with chocolate bunnies and jelly beans. This year, my colleague Sarah got sick before she could come in to collect hers, so her basket sat on our manager’s desk for a while. One day, I was feeling really down and just needed a sugar rush. The jelly beans looked so tempting. So, without thinking much about it, I took one or two... then three. By the end of the week, they were all gone. I know it's not exactly stealing since it wasn't locked up somewhere, but there was this weird sense of guilt because Sarah had been looking forward to those jelly beans and they're her favorite candy. She mentioned how much she loved them a few times in passing and I knew it bothered her not having gotten hers. Now, here’s the tricky part: Sarah came back last week after being out for a while, and she looked at that empty basket with such disappointment in her eyes. She didn’t say anything to me directly, but my manager asked if anyone had eaten them, and I fibbed about not knowing who did. It wasn't exactly a lie since the truth was I just couldn't bring myself to admit it. I feel bad every time I think about how that little candy probably ruined her day even though it’s such a small thing in the grand scheme of things. I've considered confessing, but then worry about what she might think and if this will cause any kind of weird office drama. I'm stuck between doing the right thing and not wanting to make myself feel worse by admitting my little indulgence.
