I Broke My Friend's Art Supplies in a Petty Spiteful Mood

Anonymous Elusive Gossip #365 · General

So here’s the deal. I’m an artist and I’ve been going through a really rough patch lately with my art, feeling stuck, uninspired, you know how it goes. And to top it all off, my friend Sam has been riding high on success lately. They’re in one of those moods where they just can’t stop talking about their latest big project and how much they’re loving the attention from their work. I get that people are happy with their successes, but it’s hard to see when I’m not feeling my best. And then there was this moment last week, Sam had come over to give me some feedback on a piece I was working on. It wasn’t a great day for either of us and we both were in snarky moods. They walked into my studio space, but as they got closer, I saw them stop suddenly. I could feel the tension build up when they noticed that all their art supplies had been strewn across my worktable and floor. Sam’s paint tubes were open, markers had caps chewed off, brushes scattered about, pencils snapped in half. Yeah, it was a bit of an overreaction on my part. Sam looked at me with disbelief, but I tried to shrug it off as if it didn’t matter, “Just cleaning up.” But we both knew that wasn’t true. They couldn’t say anything back then; they were too stunned. After a few awkward minutes and some small talk about other things, Sam had to leave. I know better now. As the day went on, I felt sick to my stomach, thinking about how hurt Sam must have been by what I did. Art is personal, and it’s not okay to mess with someone else’s creative process just because you’re feeling jealous or down. But sometimes our emotions take over and we do things that are completely out of character. I’ve tried talking to Sam since then, but it hasn’t gone well so far. They’re still processing their feelings, which I understand completely. All I can do now is hope for forgiveness and try not to let my bad days bring me down again in such a destructive way.
