When I Stole My Kids' Halloween Candy

I know it’s not something to be proud of, but last week when my kids left their trick-or-treating haul on the kitchen table overnight, I couldn’t resist. I snuck a few pieces while they were sleeping, mostly chocolate because that’s what I love most. It was like sneaking cookies from the jar as a kid myself. The thing is, my kids are going to find out sooner or later, I can see the unease in their eyes when checking if something’s missing. I feel bad for taking candy that belongs to them, especially knowing how much they look forward to eating it over time. But there was just this chocolate bar calling my name from inside its plastic wrapper... Now every time I see those empty wrappers in the trash, I cringe a little.
