Patient Secrets Keep Coming Out

I'm a nurse at a small community hospital, and I've been catching myself letting slip more than just medical information lately. It's not intentional, I swear!, but there have been moments where the most random details about people’s lives are falling out of my mouth without any thought behind it. Like when Mrs. Thompson, who has such an adorable dog but hates taking him for walks in the rain, was on the phone and I blurted out that her neighbor had a garden sale coming up! Her eyes went wide as she put down the receiver and gave me this look like maybe my tongue was going to be my downfall one of these days. I feel terrible about it, what if patients think they can't trust me with their deepest secrets? It's not like I’m sharing them for malicious reasons or anything; I just need to work on my filter. What if word gets around and people start avoiding the hospital, thinking the confidentiality agreement doesn’t mean much here? Ugh, this is stressing me out so bad.
