My Kids' Halloween Prank Went Too Far

So here's my story. My kids, let's call them Alex and Jordan, they're 15 and 17 respectively, love Halloween. Every year we plan out their costumes, carve pumpkins, and get the house decorated with lights and cobwebs. This year was different though. They came up with a prank to pull on our neighbor Mr. Thompson who's quite elderly but always seems to be awake until late at night. He’s friendly enough, but not the most social type. They wanted to do something big, so they decided to rig his front door bell to go off every time someone pressed it for three nights straight before Halloween. They thought it would get a laugh and maybe even a response from Mr. Thompson who often ignores trick-or-treaters anyway. I gave them the lecture about being respectful but ended up getting distracted by work and not following through on keeping an eye on their plans. The night of, they went ahead with it. It started off harmless enough; just some people passing by for candy in our street noticed Mr. Thompson’s doorbell ringing constantly. But later that evening when trick-or-treating ended and the streets were quiet again, I heard complaints coming from Mr. Thompson's house late into the night. My heart sank as I realized their prank had gone too far. Next day after school, I called them home right away to talk about it. We apologized sincerely and made amends by fixing his doorbell which was starting to show wear from all those rings. But even though they were remorseful, the damage was done, Mr. Thompson seems a bit more on edge now with the holiday over. Lesson learned, I hope.
