My Little Brother's 'Gamer' Secrets Aren't So Secret Anymore

So here’s the deal. I’m the eldest sibling in our family, and my younger brother Jack has always had this weird fascination with video games that he thinks I don’t know about. But I do, more than he realizes. He sneaks around thinking no one sees him play these long hours into the night while everyone else is asleep or trying to get some rest before school starts again in the morning. Now, normally I wouldn’t be too bothered by this since gaming isn’t exactly a bad thing. But Jack seems like he’s living two different lives: the one at home where he’s supposedly following all the rules and another online world that consumes him whenever he gets the chance to slip away into it. I first noticed his secret stash of headphones with noise cancellation because they seemed odd for someone who isn’t into gaming. Then came those late-night messages on his phone that made me curious, something about ‘team’ meetings or strategy sessions that went well past when I knew he should be sleeping. At this point, I wasn’t sure if my brother was just playing games nonstop or maybe even sneaking in real-life activities under the guise of these games. I couldn’t resist anymore and finally did what any older sibling would do: I snooped around a bit more and found out he had been downloading all sorts of mods, extra content that adds new features to his favorite game. When confronted about this, Jack acted like it was no big deal and claimed everything was fine because he wasn’t playing during the day when mom and dad could catch him at it. I admit I might have overreacted a bit, maybe my frustration with feeling ignored by him led me to treat his hobby as some kind of rebellion. But what really got to me was seeing how much more engaged he was in this digital world compared to the one we’re supposed to be living in together. It felt like a disconnect that went deeper than just spending too many hours in front of a screen. After talking things out, Jack explained he didn’t want me finding out because he thought I’d react negatively based on how old-fashioned I can sometimes seem about technology and video games specifically. Turns out he’s been using these games to learn about teamwork, problem-solving, and even basic programming skills, all hidden from my watchful eye. I feel like a bit of an asshole for not trusting him more and invading his privacy without cause, but at least we talked it through, and now I see the positive sides of what he was doing. Guess being the oldest sibling isn’t just about setting examples; it’s also learning when to let go and accept that maybe my little brother is growing up faster than I thought.
